Good oral hygiene requires very little time and effort to perform. Once you have established a routine, you will reap the rewards of your efforts.

Your mouth is the portal that receives the nourishment to sustain your body. Hence why it’s important to provide the necessary care to keep your teeth and gums healthy.

Brushing and flossing your teeth on a daily basis combined with good eating habits and regular visits to your dentist are the primary ingredients for preventive care of your teeth and gums.

Good Oral Hygiene Habits

  1. Brush properly. Brushing your teeth two or three times a day with a soft bristle toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste removes stains and food particles that can cause cavities. Poor brushing habits allow trapped food to accumulate and can cause tooth decay, gum disease or more serious problems. The Canadian Dental Association offers tips on how to brush our teeth.
  2. Don’t forget to floss. Flossing your teeth once a day is an important step to remove the food particles trapped between your teeth and inhibit the formation of plaque. Floss is still the best method you can use to get between your teeth and down to the gums to disrupt plaque so it won’t harden and have to be scraped off.
  3. Eat nutritious, teeth-friendly meals. Eating healthy foods and snacks throughout the day will help to keep your teeth and your body healthy. Avoid high-acid foods and drinks like fruit juices, sports drinks, lemonades, fruit-flavoured drinks and soft drinks. They can damage the enamel on your teeth and expose the inner layer, leading to sensitive teeth.
  4. See your dentist regularly. Visiting your dentist twice a year is an integral part of good oral hygiene to complement your routine of brushing, flossing and diet. When you go to your dentist, the doctor and hygiene team check your teeth, do an oral exam and take x-rays. These steps are necessary in detecting any problems with your teeth or gums.
