Invisalign Pros and Cons You Need to Know About

invisalign pros and cons you need to know

If misaligned or crooked teeth make you less confident about your smile, one of the dental solutions you can look into is Invisalign.

Invisalign offers similar results as braces. However, the treatment process is different. Many patients love the discreet look and ease of use of Invisalign. But, as with any other treatments, it also comes with disadvantages.

It’s important to understand both sides – the good and the bad – so you can decide whether it’s the best orthodontic solution for you. To help you out, we’ve rounded up a list of the pros and cons of Invisalign. Let’s get started.

  • Attractive. Arguably the best feature of Invisalign are its virtually invisible aligners. If you’re not comfortable wearing metal braces and prefer an option that’s more discreet, Invisalign makes the cut. You won’t have to feel conscious when you smile. Chances are people won’t even notice you’re wearing a dental appliance.
  • Comfortable. Metal braces come with sharp edges that can cause irritation or cuts inside your mouth. Invisalign, on the other hand, come in the form of smooth plastic aligners. You won’t have to worry about painful lesions. If you’re into sports, Invisalign may also work better for you as it won’t present a potential cause of injury.
  • Removable. You can remove your Invisalign braces before eating, engaging in physical activities, brushing, or flossing. This is something you won’t be able to do with traditional braces.
  • Unrestricted diet. Conventional braces may cause you to limit your food choices. Hard, thick, or crispy types of food can damage your braces. With Invisalign, there’s no limit to what you can enjoy during each meal. You can remove them before eating so you can continue indulging in your favorite snacks and dishes.
  • No oral hygiene interruptions. Cleaning your teeth becomes more challenging with metal brackets, wires, and elastic ties. Food debris can get trapped and it’ll also be harder to reach tight spaces between your teeth. With Invisalign, you can brush and floss freely. The appliance is removable, which means you can proceed with your regular oral care habits as usual.
  • Easy-care. To clean your Invisalign aligners, you’ll only need to brush or scrub them using a toothbrush, bleach, and water. Do this every other day, for a minute or two.
  • Shorter treatment process. Unlike traditional braces which can take up to 24 months to complete, Invisalign treatments average at 12 months. You can achieve your desired results within a shorter period of time. Note, however, that the condition of your teeth and your commitment will also impact the duration of your treatment.

  • Treatment duration. While Invisalign requires a shorter treatment period as compared to traditional braces, it still can last for a year. Hence, this tooth straightening option may not be suitable if you’re looking to achieve results, faster. For instance, if you need your teeth fixed for an upcoming event, then you might want to look into other dental treatments like veneers.
  • Cost. Another drawback of Invisalign is its cost. Your dental insurance might only cover a portion of its total cost. Talk to your dental team about the overall treatment cost so you can set your expectations.
  • Requires diligence. You’re required to wear your aligners for at least 22 hours a day. This means that your commitment is paramount to the success of your treatment. If you’re unable to use your aligners as regularly as you ought to, they may no longer feel as comfortable. When this happens, you need to see your dentist to have new impressions and aligners taken.
  • Adjustment period. Although the aligners will be fitted to your teeth, you may find them a bit uncomfortable at first. But, patients adjust to their aligners differently. Some are able to get used to it fast while some take longer.
  • Can be inconvenient. You might find it inconvenient having to remove and put your aligners back on, over again. But then, this is a case to case basis. Some patients don’t mind taking out their aligners while some are worried they might lose it or forget putting it back again.
